The software used in Introduction to the Command Line (ICL), published by the GNU Press, an imprint of the Free Software Foundation.

In the intro to ICL, they show how to quickly resize an image from the command line with the following example:
 convert -resize 300 profile.jpg profile_small.jpg

This program convert is one of several utilities that are part of the ImageMagick package. The others are:

Convert images between image formats
In-place batch processing
Overlay two images in special ways
Generate arrays of thumbnails
Output information an image
Look for differences between images
Display images and slideshows
ImageMagick's experimental scripting Language
